The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reacted to the directive of the Federal Government to vice-chancellors to reopen the universities to allow students to go back to classes. Naija News reports that the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Monday gave the order in a letter approved by the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed. In the letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, the Commission directed the Vice Chancellors to ensure that lecturers resume class.

The federal government has described the lingering strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as unreasonable. He argued that eighty percent of what ASUU demanded from the government have been given to them so, in fairness, the union should have called off the strike.
